Swachh Bharat Mission

Government programme

One of the revolutionary campaigns of Prime Minister 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' is unique in itself.  This initiative of the Government of India is commendable.  Nowadays this issue is discussed every day.  This subject has been given in various competitions and examinations in schools and colleges.  As this is one of the Prime Minister's development projects.  Therefore, it is expected that everyone should be aware of this at the academic level.

Preface

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a commendable effort of the Government of India.  If seen, it is our moral responsibility to keep our surroundings clean.  If everyone was aware of their responsibilities, there would be no need for this campaign.

It is a shame that everyone cleans their house but throws all their filth, garbage outside, on roads, streets and squares.  They do not understand that the whole country is our home.  It is our job to keep it clean too.  No neighbor or outsider will come to clean it, we have to clean it.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan started.

After becoming Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi launched the campaign on 02 October 2014 on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.  A change campaign was launched to clean up India.  It was Gandhiji's dream to see a clean India.  Gandhiji always asked people to keep their surroundings clean.

Through Swachh Bharat, awareness should be created especially among people in rural areas to use toilets and not go in the open.  It also spreads all diseases.  Which is not good for anyone.

The campaign, which started on Gandhiji's 145th birth anniversary, has completed five years on October 2, 2019.  As the target is to make India completely open defecation free (open defecation free) by 2019.  This target has not been fully met, but there has certainly been an astonishing jump in numbers.

The role:

Gandhiji always said that cleanliness is more important than freedom.  From this statement we can understand how important cleanliness was in their eyes.  He envisioned a clean and healthy India, which the Hon'ble Prime Minister undertook to fulfill.  No one had paid attention to this until now.

 What is this campaign?

It was conceived by Gandhiji before independence, but is officially considered to have started on 1st April 1999.  When the Government of India formed Commissions for Rural Sanitation and Total Sanitation.  Later in 2012 the then Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh gave his consent and named the scheme 'Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan'.

Talking about the government data, toilets have been constructed in about 10,19,64,757 houses so far.  There are 6,03,055 open defecation free villages.  706 districts have come under this category.  A total of 36 states and union territories are making this campaign a success.  'Gandhi Ji's Fountain' is the logo (symbol) of this campaign.  It is assigned to the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under the Ministry of Energy, Government of India.

The Prime Minister appealed to the entire country to join this campaign in maximum numbers and make it a success.  The whole country accepted his words and this campaign emerged as a nationwide movement.  On the request of the Prime Minister, big personalities joined in this mission.  As part of the cleanliness drive, everyone took to the streets with the PM.  Carrying a broom, the PM himself cleaned the AsiGhat on the banks of the Ganges in Varanasi.

Epilogue:

"Whatever change you want to see in the world, first implement it in yourself."  - Mahatma Gandhi.

This quote of Mahatma Gandhi also applies to cleanliness.  If we want to see change in society, we must first bring about change within ourselves.  Everyone keeps looking for others.  And you leave the car inside first.

Cleanliness keeps both our body and mind healthy and safe.  We have to do it not for anyone else but for ourselves.  This awareness has to be spread to the masses.  For this we have to work from ground level.  We have to inculcate the habit of cleanliness in children from childhood.  They have to teach that the dog also sweeps where it sits.  When animals are so conscious of cleanliness, then we are humans.

 Preface:

How ironic that our government has to run a campaign to keep our house, neighborhood etc. clean.  Indian people are also amazing, they look at the face of the government for their work.  It will be good for us if the yard of our house is clean, nowadays we expect from others for our personal interests.  This habit has to be changed.  This is important not only for us but for the entire country.  Keeping this in mind, this campaign was launched.

Why was Swachh Bharat Abhiyan started?

Launched on October 2, 2014, the campaign aimed to make India a 'Clean India' by 2019, Gandhiji's 150th birth anniversary.  What better tribute to Gandhiji than to see the India of his dreams.  One wonders why this was needed.  I have seen many times that people go out even after having toilets in their homes.  Because they have made such a trend.  This movement was started to change this thinking.  Changing the mindset of rural people is a difficult task.

Its first objective is to rid India of the phenomenon of open defecation.  Under this, the government built toilets in every village.  He also appealed to people to use these toilets.  Give up the habit of going out.  Not only this, camps are set up at various places to spread awareness among people, people are made aware of its benefits through street plays.  Proper waste management is also taught in all households with the help of Gram Panchayats.  And water pipeline is also laid in every house.  India has a population of 1.25 billion, more than half of whom still live in villages.

If we look at the data, according to the 2011 census, about 72.2% of the population in 16.78 crore households live in villages.  And you will be surprised to know that only 5.48 crore households are using toilets.  This means that 67% of households still do not avail this facility.  According to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation in 2012-13, 40% of rural households have toilets.  60% is still left.  If we talk about government expenditure, the estimated amount for 5 years is Rs 62,009 crore and in this the central government has received about Rs 14,623 crore as assistance.

 Epilogue:

If we cannot keep the back of our houses clean, Swaraj will be dishonest.  Everyone should have his own broom” – Mahatma Gandhi

This statement of Gandhiji clearly shows how important cleanliness is for all of us.  This campaign was launched by the government with great enthusiasm.  And a lot of work has been done in this regard.  All the States and Union Territories of our country have contributed.  Taking this trend further, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister 'Yogi Adityanathji' has banned tobacco, gutka, paan etc. in public places.  The success of any program depends on the mindset of the people.  Even today, elderly people in rural areas are either illiterate or poorly educated.  In this situation, the situation becomes even more difficult.

The government has launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to create awareness about cleanliness in the country.  If we keep our house clean like this, is it not our responsibility to keep our country clean as well?  Do not throw garbage around and put it in the trash.  Mahatma Gandhi dreamed of a clean India, in the context of which Gandhiji said that "cleanliness is more important than freedom." Many attempts were made for this, but were not successful.

 What is Swachh Bharat Abhiyan?

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a national cleanliness campaign initiated by the Government of India, covering 4041 statutory city streets, footpaths and many other places.  It is a big movement that has been said to make India completely clean by 2019.  The mission was launched on October 2, 2014 (145th birth anniversary of Bapu) and is targeted to be completed by October 2, 2019 (Bapu's 150th birth anniversary).  The campaign has been implemented by India's Ministry of Urban Development and Drinking Water and Sanitation in both rural and urban areas.

 Need for clean India campaign

The work of this mission should continue continuously.  It is absolutely essential for the physical, mental, social and intellectual well-being of the people of India.  It is to promote the social status of India in true sense, which can be started by bringing cleanliness everywhere.  Here below some points are mentioned which show the need of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

 Result

We can say that we have been quite successful in our target for this year.  As we have all heard the saying 'Cleanliness is the next step towards God'.  We can confidently say that if the people of India follow this effectively, the whole country will become like God's house with Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in the coming time.  As a true citizen it is our duty not to spread and not to spread filth.  Make the country shine like your home so you too can proudly say you are an Indian.
